A.K.T;

Place for social discourse and interdisciplinary laboratory of the future

The A.K.T; is a place for social discourse and an interdisciplinary laboratory of the future. Current issues are examined at the A.K.T; from the perspective of design and art and the social relevance of art and design is made visible.
The A.K.T; in the stairwell tower of the former Alfons Kern School in Pforzheim offers space for this on several levels:
Exhibitions are regularly held on two floors. On the top floor, students from the Design & Future Making Master's programme at Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences research future issues in the MADLAB, while the ground floor and first floor are home to Café Roland.

The A.K.T; is part of the Creative Industries department of the Eigenbetrieb Wirtschaft und Stadtmarketing Pforzheim, Emma-Jaeger-Straße 20, 75175 Pforzheim

History

The Alfons Kern Tower
The A.K.T; (formerly Alfons-Kern-Turm) is the stairwell of the Alfons-Kern-Schule, which was demolished in 2010. The building was inaugurated in 1953 as a new building for the trade school that was destroyed in the war. Alongside other trades, watchmakers were also trained there. In the course of an extension in 1957, it was given the name Alfons Kern School in memory of the Pforzheim master builder. Thanks to the listed sundial, which is located on the south side and was designed in 1956 by Pforzheim artists Wolfgang Kappis and Rolf Gröger as a visible symbol of the tradition of clockmaking in Pforzheim, the tower has been preserved. In 2012, Café Roland was launched as an interim utilisation project on the initiative of the Creative Industries department and students from the Faculty of Design. However, due to a lack of infrastructure, it could initially only be operated in the summer months. As part of the 250th anniversary of Goldstadt Pforzheim in 2017, the Alfons-Kern-Turm was renovated with the help of sponsors so that it can now operate all year round. The A.K.T; is located in the Kreativquartier an der Enz, directly opposite the EMMA creative centre in Pforzheim and within walking distance of the Faculty of Design at Pforzheim University.

The remodelling of the Alfons Kern Tower was financed by: Werner Wild Foundation, Stadtwerke Pforzheim, Thüga
