The third gender

Diversity is more
Boy or girl? In Germany, the birth of a child, including the gender, must be reported to the registry office within one week. For a long time, a binary understanding of gender prevailed in our society, meaning that legally and socially only the genders "male" or "female" existed, which meant that people of a different gender were excluded from society. Since 2013, people in Germany have been able to waive their gender entry in the birth register or, since December 2018, select the entry "diverse". The Federal Constitutional Court's decision in October 2017 that the Basic Law also protects the gender identity of people who cannot be permanently categorised as either male or female was decisive. But does a third gender entry do justice to gender diversity? How is gender affiliation defined, and what about the discourse on the gender of non-binary, transgender or intersex people?
The exhibition "The third gender. Diversity is more" shows multicultural positions that deal with these questions and reflect on how to deal with gender diversity from a social and societal perspective.

Jake Elwes "The Zizi Show"

"My latest work aims to bring together two things I love, artificial intelligence, and the world of drag performance. In an entertaining and humorous way, drag has allowed me to dig into some of the social issues built into machine learning technology. Drag is just such a brilliant medium for exploring the layers of construction and social bias in AI.

Working closely with friends from the London drag scene, in Zizi we have created a 'deepfake' virtual cabaret. Deepfake technology has enabled us to collaborate with machine learning to do drag - trained on 13 extremely talented performers - perhaps proving that drag queens, drag kings and drag things will never be replaced by artificial intelligence.

The Zizi Project pushes the boundaries of both drag and AI to discover what AI can teach us about drag - and what drag can teach us about AI."

"The cat would rather be a bird" by Melanie Jilg

The cat would be more of a bird
The visual audio piece - in 5 settings

From Melanie Jilg

Four intersex people talk about their experiences, thoughts and feelings.
What does the questioning of gender, one of the most important foundations of identity in our culture, mean? They tell of foreignness in one's own body and foreignness in society, the associated taboo and forced adaptation to the heterosexual norm through serious interventions in the (physical) integrity of a person; no possibility of expressing oneself because one quickly comes up against language and knowledge barriers and at the same time the longing for perception and recognition.
But what is the real problem?

This documentary experiment does not attempt to explain the medical-biological "phenomenon" of intersex. Doctors will not have their say in this film, nor will images of "ambiguous" genitalia be shown.

It's about looking at the topic of intersex from a different angle, not from the side of medicine, which still holds the power of categorisation, which has a pathologising influence on all terminology and which makes intersexual gender variations the object of scientific investigation.
